l.l. cool j(ulie)

did i ever tell you how cute my friend Julie is? she's got this whole americana thing going on that convinces me the secret to chic lies in an l.l. bean catalog. even though she's my friend and i totally made her take this picture, let's give her the same street style treatment that regular ol' strangers get.

the beauty of this look lies in it's simplicity. there's only 5 things you need to know about this outfit:

1. classic little boy's blazer.

2. basic white tee.

3. simple gray scarf.

4. cuffed just right jeans.

5. and you already know i love her classic clarks.

add accessories; like say, a gold watch and bangle that play off your blazer buttons and a perfectly beat up tote et voila! an outfit you'll never look back and wonder what the hell you were thinking.

street style

hmmm... not much to say here 'cept she looks cool as sh*t.

in point of fact:

-the bold shoulder jacket; very balmain, although very margiela before that anyway, which in either case references the 80's, which touched on the 40's, ..gah!

-ripped and faded jeans; also very balmain-ish

-cross body bag; just very current (she applied the chain strap herself!)

-disheveled bangs with wild waves; very.. whatever i'm tired of this game.

and, i was delighted to hear that almost all of the look was thrifted aside from the jeans and shoes but even they were from H&M so what can i say? a good eye will get you far style wise.

kind of reminds me of someone else i know (of). doesn't she totally look like irina lazareanu???

shuesday

today was fun in that i saw two pairs of shoes that i loved. one, a cool classic best friend you can count on and the other, a sexy new exciting lover.

the clark's desert boot always looks good on everyone: man, woman, or child. seriously they can ground a dress or jeans. and from what i hear, you'd have to pry them from tonne goodman's cold dead hands (feet?). when im feeling floppy and casual, i reach for 'em.

i haven't yet purchased any clog boots ... oh--- yes well, clog boots are just what they sound like. here look:

clog-boot girl was traipsing through bryant park. when i stopped her to snap a pic, clog-boot girl's boyfriend said,
"cool boots right?"

damn straight. i particularly love her pant indecision; casually cuffed or open and free? both apparently!

not yo mama's jeans...

i spied this cutie while out buying a plastic king crown of all things for an upcoming shoot... even from behind i knew she had an awesome look and she didn't even freak out when i came jogging up behind her. in fact, in true 'only in new york' fashion, once i was done she whipped out her own camera to take a picture of me!

now-let's chop it up and serve it yeah?

pants: harem/cropped/pleats. high risk = high reward

cool shades: check

tangle of wristwear: check

tee: possibly her man's

hat: oversized, sumptuous knit

let's get back to the pants for a sec'. quite reminiscent of the much discussed "mom-jeans" from the marc fall (09) show wouldn't you say? nice to see a for reals interpretation. not that i wouldn't wear the marc version if given the dough and the hip circumference; i'm just sayin...

more street/subway style shots to come but i gotta tell ya, there are some shy new yorkers out there! yes ma'am! i get told no more often then yes. guess i have to work on my pitch; it's not like im the sartorialist or something...

hel(mut) yeah!

i found an old helmut newton book at my office. i pounced on it and ran away, much like i do at the thrift store. even though no one was challenging me for it, also much like the thrift store. i've always loved his images and this was a small collection of his most iconic. it hits all the helmut high notes: boobs, voyeurism, sapphic lovin' and celebrity portraits. i've included a few here, my favorite being a portrait of a young karl lagerfeld looking h-o-t!

karl lagerfeld, 1973

tied up torso, 1980

woman examining man, 1975 (love this one!)

saddle I, 1976 (click here for saddle II if you're curious, i know i was)

P.I.M.P.

dont you kind of love those pimp suits some guys wear? and by some guys i mean yeah, black guys. reminiscent of the zoot suits popular in the 30's and 40's, they now seem to be standard baptist church fair and conversely, a fave of snoop dogg friend the bishop don "magic" juan.

right off the train station by my house is the stacy adams plaza, a 3 store strip that houses every manner of suit, hat, and shoe for your inner pimp.

i like to walk by real slow like im not really looking; visions of hamish bowles and andre 3000 dancing in my head. we've got to get those two together for a shopping playdate; the fun they'd have! i love that very few degrees seperate a vogue editor and a rapper from the south. erha, sartorially speaking that is...

StyleCaster

if you haven't already signed up for stylecaster, hurry up and do it now... seriously, i'll wait.... you back? ok. so meg cuna and the gang invited me down to guest style which was loads of fun. just racks of clothes and no advertiser list**. wheeeee!

once you're all logged in, you can add items to your own personal fantasy closet, check out other peoples style boards and listen to exclusive interviews. its almost like facebook or something but made especially for fashion folks. good times.

so the look above is one put together by moi.

**when you style an editorial for a magazine, even though your creativity is supposed to be king, you are still given a list of advertisers, for example: armani, diesel, reebok, etc... that must be worked into the story. advertisers are afterall, how the mag makes money at the end of the day!

Brent from the block

i spotted this fine young dandy while hopping on the train late for work the other day. didn't stop me from getting out with him at 14th st (3 stops earlier than my own) to snap his pic. good sport that he was, he forgave my early a.m. stalking. we made fast chatty friends and turns out he lives right in my neighborhood in brooklyn. wonder if he shops at the stacy adams plaza on nostrand? doubtful...
there are so many aspects of this look i covet: the cute specs, jaunty scarf, lv tote, and shiny loafers. i was actually wearing a scarf and loafers myself when i snapped this. maybe im just a narcissist. although, i had more of a grey gardens thing going on.
